Hard to Be Me

One weekend I was running the overhead projection for my church. It was the third service and I found mind wandering off. I had been feeling down lately and I was frustrated because I knew exactly why I was down and still couldn’t recover. This song definitely helped though. There is just something therapeutic about putting your thoughts on paper… then finding a good tune for them! I had the song written before church was over and I recorded it a few days later.

Butterflies and Grasshoppers

One day I decided to head out to The Enchanted Rock State Park. I brought along my bible and a pad of paper. I hiked to the top and was enjoying a peaceful time beneath the only tree on top of the rock. I was struggling with some decisions in my life… ok, a decision. Often a song will help get me thinking so I started to write. I wanted to find a way to describe how I felt. Basically I felt like a grasshopper chasing a butterfly. My favorite line from the song: “Why was she born in a cocoon.. and I was born on the range?”

Sleeper Train to Bangkok

Back in 2002, I had the incredible opportunity to serving under some missionaries in Thailand for 9 months. Getting there was exciting, seeing new places was exciting, language school was exciting, going off to my first assignment was very very frightening. But, that was where I found myself in October of 2002. I was on a train to Bangkok to meet up with the team I would be working with. On the train was my roommate, who was an American and just as new to this whole thing as I was. It was well past midnight and the bed they had provided me on the train, as comfortable as it was, was not very comforting. So, I laid awake praying and reading my bible until some of the statements in this song hit me. So, I got out a pad and starting writing…. And thus… the song was born.

Good Times

As a songwriter you always feel some what exposed. When you are proud of a song you want to show the world… or whoever will listen. By doing that though you are basically letting someone read your diary. If I were Caedmons Call I could write it so that you wouldn’t really know what I was talking about. However, I prefer the songwriting styles of Ross King or Billy Joel, for example. Just put it out there and let it speak for itself.

Let It Show

I have always enjoyed the music of Jonathan Dunn, a talented San Antonio singer/songwriter. It just so happens that he is my little brother and he lets me record his songs! He is also quite a guitarist, as you can hear on this song. This is a song I wish I had written because I can so totally identify with it! So, I knew I had to record it. This song was the first time I had attempted to add a choir to a song. I had some fun with that!

Lord You Are

Another Jonathan Dunn classic. A simple prayer of thanks to the Lord. For everything I need, desire and long for, He is.

This was one of the first songs I recorded in my home studio.

Sometimes

I had the incredible opportunity of serving in Moldova for a summer. The highlight of the trip for me was performing a concert downtown as an evangelical outreach. It was the first time I have ever tried to lead a band full of people who didn’t speak English. Ah, music, the universal language! The words to this song were written by a Moldovan Pastor named Sergei Babaraica. We had been singing some songs in our downtime and he brought this poem out. I picked up my guitar and played it through the way you hear it on this CD. I still don’t know how that happened! The next night we performed it for the youth group. I love the idea of the song: we are so inconsistent but God is so consistent and faithful.

Trust and Obey

I have always loved this song and recorded a version of it for my first album. However I was in a rush to finish that album because I was moving to Thailand. This time, however, I was able to finish it the way I wanted. It’s still done a capella but now there is a choir backing the lead vocal. The message of the song is simple: Trust and Obey. Living that, on the other hand, can be difficult.

Right Beside Me

The song literally came to me in my sleep. I woke up with the melody in my head and then started to figure out what the song was going to be about. As I went about the day I began to write some lyrics about my life and how God has always been faithful to me. Jackie’s beautiful violin was the perfect touch to finish it.

Way to Go

I wrote this a few years ago as a gift to my parents for their anniversary. I am so blessed to have such great parents who raised me on the Bible.
